It determines how the wheels self-center and affects the stability of your car. A simple example is the front wheels of a shopping cart—they have a high degree of positive caster, which keeps them moving straight without drifting.When your vehicle pulls to one side while driving straight, it may indicate negative caster, which can be corrected with wheel alignment adjustments.  How Caster WorksWhen you turn your steering wheel, the front wheels pivot using the suspension system. Caster measures the angle of this steering pivot. – Positive caster occurs when the upper part of the pivot leans toward the rear of the vehicle. – Negative caster occurs when it leans forward.This angle directly affects how the vehicle responds on the road.  Effects of Positive and Negative Caster– Uneven caster: If caster angles differ between sides, the vehicle may pull toward the side with more negative caster. – Excessively negative caster: The steering feels light, and the vehicle may wander or drift easily, making it difficult to maintain a straight path. – Excessively positive caster: The steering feels heavy and may “kick” over bumps, but it increases straight-line stability.Caster does not significantly affect tire wear. – Positive caster benefits: As the vehicle moves forward, positive caster generates a self-centering force, helping the wheels straighten naturally and improving stability. Modern power steering systems make heavier steering easier to handle, even with increased positive caster. – Negative caster drawbacks: Mostly found in older vehicles, negative caster makes steering too light, reduces directional control, and can cause the vehicle to meander.
