3D Pattern Cutting Institute – Multi-Purpose Pattern Cutting Ruler by Renko Endo

This Multi-purpose pattern cutting ruler was invented by the legendary pattern cutter Renko Kondo.In the year 1949, she graduated from Mr. Ito Shigehira’s pattern cutting institute. In the spring of 1964, she went to France and spent five years studying Western fashion at ECOLE DE LA CHAMBRE SYNDICALE DE LA COUTURE PARISIENNE. After graduating, she joined BALENCIAGA, led by Mr. Cristóbal Balenciaga, which reigned over the Paris fashion scene for 30 years. Upon returning to Japan, in 1970, she established the Tokyo Three-Dimensional Pattern Cutting Research Institute. She passed away in August of the year 2011, at the age of 90.-What is 3D pattern cutting –The message from RenkoSince the introduction of Western clothing in Japan, the method of drawing and creating garment patterns using paper has become widely prevalent. Although the “Three-Dimensional Cutting Method” is considered the most ideal, it has not yet surpassed traditional pattern drafting methods. In the current era, where reliance on measurements alone is common, I believe we have not truly achieved mastery in “professional three-dimensional cutting.” Fabric is woven through the interlacing of warp and weft threads. To truly master three-dimensional cutting, one must be capable of visually manipulating the hang (drape) of the fabric’s weave. The complexity of garment construction extends beyond design; it encompasses understanding fabric composition and manipulating the musculature of the human body. “Three-Dimensional Cutting” is a technique from Parisian haute couture, and to master it requires more than just relying on measurements. Cultivating sensitivity and developing a discerning eye are crucial. Furthermore, this mastery encompasses every aspect of one’s career and serves as its foundation.
